For the second year in a row, the Tampa Bay Partnership and Central Florida Partnership convened high-ranking business and civic leaders to promote regional thinking and solutions. At the Super Regional Leadership Conference, held on Wednesday-Thursday, May 26-27, 2010, at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Kissimmee, close to 500 participants from the East Coast to the West Coast of Florida explored global competitiveness issues and concepts and engaged in meaningful dialogue to discover what more we can do to build the Super Region’s economic competitiveness and improve the quality of life of its citizens and visitors.  Click here to review the extensive media coverge of the Super Regional Leadership Conference.

At the event, world-renowned urban planner Professor Jonathan Barnett and members of his Urban Design Studio (PennDesign) presented the results of Connecting for Global Competitiveness: Florida’s  Super Region, an in-depth study about the value of operating coast-to-coast as a Super Region. The study, commissioned by the Tampa Bay Partnership, the Central Florida Partnership and managed by myregion.org, also analyzes the Super Region’s economic assets, comparing current trends with alternative futures that could be achieved if we exercise “Super Regional Action.”

Connecting for Global Competitiveness: Florida’s Super Region identifies major development opportunities related to transportation and proposes a comprehensive system of local transit throughout the Super Region, incorporating existing plans and coordinating them with the High Speed Rail network.

In addition, the study proposes an alternative scenario of 44% less land consumed, 1 million acres conserved and $270 billion saved in new roads, meaning that the region would be “growing up” not “growing out.”
