Starting bright and early last Tuesday morning, the members of Leadership Orlando Class 79 had regional assets on their agenda beginning with a trip to NASA Kennedy Space Center and ending the day “on the track” at Daytona International Speedway. Coming away with a new understanding of the historic precedence, economic impact and international prestige these two icons bring to Central Florida was a “given.” But standing at the foot of Launch Pad 39A and riding in a Pace Car at 110 mph were an unexpected, once-in-a-lifetime thrill! With special thanks to Class Member, Trey Carlson, Master Planner in the Center Planning and Development Office and former KSC State of Florida Liaison for NASA, unprecedented access was given to the International Space Station Processing Center, Shuttle launch site, Mission Control, and the new Space X launch center. An on-site bus tour also included up-close views of the Vehicle Assembly Building, the Orbiter hangars, and the monstrous crawler that transports the Shuttle assembly to the launch pad. It was obvious that everyone involved in the space industry is extremely proud of the technologies developed and the scientific research and discoveries that have come about as a result of their important work, as well as the critical importance of maintaining Central Florida’s role in the space industry on the international stage.
Taking in the amenities of Volusia County, participants enjoyed lunch at Vince Carter’s Restaurant on LPGA Boulevard before heading to the International Motorsports Center (IMC Tower), the new headquarters facility for International Speedway Corporation and Daytona International Speedway. A soon-to-be LEED Certified building, the IMC is the first in an extensive master planned development located across US 92 from the 480-acre motorsports complex that is the “World Center of Racing.” From the early days of racing on the World’s Most Famous Beach and A1A to the world famous NASCAR Circuit, fan loyalty is unprecedented and no one does sponsorship as successfully as NASCAR. John Guthrie, Vice President of Business Development for Daytona International Speedway, provided not only the history of the sport, but also what the future holds for the home of “The Great American Race” – the Daytona 500 and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Joining Guthrie was Scott Bullock, Director of Corporate Development for International Speedway Corporation, who outlined the aspects of future development plans that will include restaurants, retail, residential and office space, in addition to a movie theatre complex. When class members arrived on “Pit Road,” they were greeted by Robin Braig, President of Daytona International Speedway, who set the stage for their personal race experience including the 31 degree banking on the 2.5 mile tri-oval.
